Your poetry glossary - a basic guide!

Here are some poetic terms you HAVE to know:

1. Stanza - a set of lines, grouped together by length, meter or rhyme scheme

2. Meter - pattern of stressed (long-sounding) & unstressed (short-sounding) syllables

3. Rhyme scheme - pattern of rhyme at the end of each line/ verse

4. Syllable - single, unbroken sound of a word

5. Couplet - 2 line stanzas

6. Tercet - 3 line stanzas

7. Quatrain - 4 line stanzas

8. Cincquain - 5 line stanzas

9. Sestet - 6 line stanzas
